Hammam / Home Spa

GUIDE TO HAMMAM AT HOME

The Hammam is an ancient bathing ritual enjoyed throughout the Middle East. In the traditional Hammam, Moroccan women will  begin with clay, massaging it into their hair and scalp, and applying a rhassoul mask to their face. Additionally, the rhassoul is used as a body mask after exfoliation to cleanse the skin and continue the process of detoxification. However, at home in your own environment, we recommend you begin with a face mask to keep your bathroom cleaner.

Hammam is the Arabic word for purifying your body. It is a relaxing process of warming, exfoliating, moisturising the body and the benefits are softer skin, good circulation and deep cleansing.

STEP 1: Prepare your skin for exfoliation with Moroccan Beldi Black Soap

Warm your skin in a bath or shower for several minutes to open the pores. Apply Beldi Soap all over your body. Use circular motions to massage the soap onto your skin and allow it to sit for approximately 5-10 minutes. The soap will soften the surface of the skin, deep cleaning the pores and separating the layer of dead skin cells to make exfoliation more effective.

Beldi Soap is a soft soap made by combining potash with Olive Oil and Eucalyptus Oil. It works as an exfoliant by loosening the dead skin cells in preparation for scrubbing with a Kessa mitt. Beldi is an essential part of the Hammam process and is known to contribute to healthy skin, reduces acne and improves circulation. It is also environmentally friendly and does not contain micro-beads.

STEP 2: Detox and deep cleanse with a Rhassoul Clay Mask

Ths is a good time to apply Rhassoul Clay to the face. A fine clay powder, high in silica and magnesium, it is mixed to a paste using either Rose Water or warm water. This can remain on the face for 5-10 minutes while you are putting Beldi soap on your body, thus making good use of the time.

Rhassoul can be used as a face mask, as a cleanser for the whole body and as a shampoo. It is regarded as the finest of clays because of its very high mineral content and capacity to draw out impurities. It is a volcanic clay that comes from deep inside the Atlas Mountains. Rhassoul is the clay of choice in high end spas and salons across the globe and is always included in Hammam treatments.

STEP 3: Exfoliate with a Kessa Glove

Wash the soap from your body and prepare your Kessa Glove by soaking in hot water. Begin to gently exfoliate your body from the neck to your feet using downward and circular strokes. A second pair of hands is useful when it comes to scrubbing the back. Rinse.

Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin’s surface to improve its appearance and to prevent clogged pores and acne. Kessa Gloves are made of coarse fabric that will smooth the skin and can be washed and re-used many times over.

STEP 4: Moisturise with Argan Oil

Gently pat your skin dry to remove excess moisture and then massage argan oil into your face, and our beautifully scented Argan and Almond Body oil into your body.

After cleansing, it is important to hydrate the skin. Oil helps to retain moisture in the cells and balances the hydro-lipid barrier on the surface of our skin. Argan Oil is very high in Vitamin E and antioxidants and is perfect for use on the face. For the body, we recommended our Argan and Almond oil which has been specially formulated for use as an everyday after-shower body treatment.
